Essex bird news highlights January 2025

Highlights at Abberton Reservoir during January included the drake Canvasback, drake Lesser Scaup, drake Ring-necked Duck, Black-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, up to fifteen Black-necked Grebes, up to two Slavonian Grebe and up to four Smew. A Great Grey Shrike was nearby at Copt Hall Marshes.

 

Highlights at King George 5th reservoir­­­­­­ were a Black-throated Diver, two Great Northern Divers, three Black-necked Grebes, Slavonian Grebe and a Smew. A Black-necked Grebe was on the River Stour off Wrabness 6th and the Velvet Scoter remained at Hanningfield Reservoir.

 

A Ferruginous Duck was on the Glen Faba pit near Lower Nazeing 12th-14th. A Smew was in the Lee Valley at Holyfield Lake 14th & Seventy Acres Lake 15th.

 

A Tundra Bean Goose was at Holland Haven CP from 26th. Single Black Brants were at Wallasea Island until 8th and Copt Hall Marshes from 6th. The Shorelark at Stone Point, East Mersea remained until 3rd.
